IrfanView in its broadest sense is a graphic viewer with editing capabilities. It is freeware that can do a lot of the same things that photo editing programs like PhotoShop can do at no cost to you. It is known to be free of spam and bugs so presents little concern when downloading to your computer. It is a Windows based program that is installed on the computers here in our Oakland Family Search Library for our patrons' use. If you would like to view some of the features it offers you can look at this YouTube tutorial to see what it is capable of doing.
The main reason I am sharing this with you is to let you see the possibilities for your own use but to also let you know that for our purposes in helping our patrons we only need to learn a few things. Lesson #32 covers three ways to edit and Lesson 12 is a review on printing from IrfanView.

Learning this week's lesson, the last link on the page, along with Lesson #12 above lesson, will help you get an over all picture of how to use IrfanView here in the library and at home if you choose. Lesson 32 has been created using the Chrome browser. The function we will be using the most in IrfanView is for copying an image for a patron of something like a census record from FamilySearch.org or Ancestry.com or other website. I appreciate Linda for her efforts in making these lessons for us. It is not easy, I promise you. This is one of those things that you absolutely must put your hands on it. As we learn it and use it, it will become second nature. This for me is either a "use it or lose it" kind of a tool. And the little red cat that serves as Mr. Irfan's logo is actually in honor of his cat. |
