Find Take Teach

We've heard some things about the "Find Take Teach" approach to teaching someone how to do their family history from the leaders of the Church in the past few months. The Consultant Planner in Family Search contained some aids for those called to use this new approach to training.  I believe it was developed to strengthen our training and to be more successful as a teacher and as a trainee.

What has prompted this new method of teaching is a study that actually got to the root of success among people within the Church that had never submitted any names but are now submitting names regularly.  What made the biggest difference? How did they succeed in this?

The slides I am using here are from a BYU Family History Library Webinar this week given Kathryn Grant and you can find it here. They are used to enhance your desire to know more about this program.

These concepts have been in existence since I first started teaching family history back in the 1980s.  People learn best one on one. Why is this so much more effective today then it has been in the past?  To me the answer is simple.

Through divine inspiration and the development of technology we can now use Family Search to Find Take And Teach.  We have the tools we need to move forward and preserve and share what we find.  We have proven methods of training, the church reaching out and developing these helps and promotion of this amazing work from the pulpit.  All these things are the beginning of something far bigger than we can possibly imagine at this point.  Now we can prepare in advance for each person we teach and tailor make our lesson for them in advance.

We can commit to teach them for as long as they need as we give them the wings to fly on their own.  Hopefully we can get them to also commit to more than one visit. Continuous help for a time is most effective accord to the study.

Having a trusted mentor is the best way to learn.  I know I still use my mentor's good advice all the time.  But the secret to that is that your mentor is not going to do it all for you.  He/she will give you the tools you need and spoon feed you to a point but, they are going to ask you to work, practice and learn.  You have to commit as that mentor does.  Then and only then can it be the best possible scenario.  My old stand by so applies at this point.  "YOU" as the trainee, have to "Put Your Hands On It."  You will get out of your learning experiences exactly what you put into them.  For those who long to learn, the time is now...like never before.
